Writing An Essay

An essay, according to Oxford Dictionary, is a short piece of writing on a particular subject. In a way, everyone can write an Essay. The only thing they need to do is contemplating and pouring their thought on a piece of writing.

Regardless of the formal essay structure, you are required to make a piece of writing in response to the article below:

The article derived from http://ebiquity.umbc.edu/blogger/2006/07/10/does-technology-change-culture-or-culture-change-technology/

Does technology change culture or culture change technology?

Does technology change culture or culture change technology?

Tim Finin, 1:00pm 10 July 2006

I attended the CRA’s Snowbird Conference last month. The most interesting talk was a keynote from Genevieve Bell (also see here) who is an anthropologist who works at Intel Research. One of her messages was that while we tend to think that technology changes culture, it’s more often the other way around. Cultures are very robust and change slowly. It’s typical for a new technology to be adapted within a culture and used to support existing patterns of behavior.

For example, she said that mobile phone manufacturers have developed popular phones for Muslim users that support their religious practices by (1) reminding them when it is time to pray, (2) orienting them towards Mecca and (3) disabling incoming calls for 20 minutes. She gave many other examples from Africa and Asia that showed how new technology is being used in ways that fit into the existing cultures.

I found the message reassuring. It’s easy to get worked up into a state of anxiety about what our modern world is doing to our societies. Human cultures are apparently more resilient than we naively assume.

So, what do you think about the topic? Write down your idea in response of the article above within 150-200 words  and post it on comment space below. Don’t forget to attach your full name and student number. The deadline is tomorrow, Friday, 4 pm. The post will be considered as one meeting attendance. Thank you.

  1. I think technology is change alongside the culture. They affect each other. Not just technology change the culture, but the culture is change the technology as well. Not just one way change, but both is the subject and object of change at the same time.
As we can see from the example, the muslims use his mobile phone to remind them about the time to pray. We can see technology change the culture here. Before they use the phone, they used watch or sun to mark praytime. But after the phone comes, they used it to remind them about the praytime. From this example, we also know that the culture change the technology as well. The mobile phone manufacturers have developed a special phone just for the muslims is the best example here. They develop the phone because they see that the muslims need that and it can become big opportunity for them too.
So, the conclusion here is that the technology change the culture because they can fulfill the need of them, and the culture change the technology because they provide market for them.

In my opinion technology cannot changed culture, but culture is affecting technology. The development of tecnology always following the flow of human culture. Because culture is too strong and changed very slowly just like the argument above. While technology has to changed fast in order to develop. So there is no way that technology can changed human culture.
I think, nowadays the technology is adapting itself to human culture. Because there are many phone application or computer application that helps people to keep living without losing their habits, that had been created by culture. For example is me, I have an application that remind me about prayer to Allah SWT when the times has come. The application is called “Prayer Time!”. If you searched in internet, you can see that an application is getting updated very quickly. That means the technology cannot stay put just for a while, it has to change constantly in order to help people lives 😀

i am agree with tim finin opinion, that technology can change culture, i mean, it not change fully, but it have modificate or it can be addition. With the development of technology it can change word “can’t become can”, and development of technology is a natural think of human. We can’t say or maybe judge that technology change the culture. I think culture it depends by our self who have a big action, i mean we can kept our culture by teach to teenagers who will continue the culture. So there’s a little relation between technology and culture. Culture can be change by person it self. i give some example in moeslim. Now, there’re many modern thing in the mosque like Air Conditioner in order to feel more comfortable while they pray. And if we think with the development technology it can change the culture ex:pray by videocall. it can’t, because there’s a limitation when we use the technology for addition thing for the culture. We know that it makes us easiest to do everything, but it still have a limitation by the culture it self. thanks, best regards ndro.

  4. well, it looks like technology have two upside effects. Some of it change their form to compatible with exiting culture, while the others change the culture itself. I can’t argue with you about the topic that you posted above, it is reality. But don’t forget that there is a time when technology change the culture slightly. There are some example that technology take over exiting culture and changes them. For example, some children or teenager forgot the culture of javaneese about taboo and behaving to the older ones. It is commonly caused by parents and technology. In this age, technologies teach a good thing and bad thing, but there are rare, technologies that teach the culture of Indonesia. when they do, the technologies is popular for a short-time. It is good to see technologies to adapt the culture, but, it will be better if there are technologies that introduce the culture. In this way, the culture will be remembered and the teenagers and children know their culture as well.

  5. If there any question like “Do technology change culture or culture change technology?” I think the right one is, culture change technology. From the start, the pusrpose of technology being created or found is to help human make a calculation of data or number.

Technology is one of the important thing in our life. Cause of that, technology become the fastest sector to develop in this era, such as mobile phone become smartphone. One of the simple reason is, the technology must help human to make their life easier.

So, from the reason. Almost all of the technology developer trying to make a technology more efficient and usable to solve their problem in this life, even it’s a simple problem. Like make a notification about time to pray, or an important application to read a holy book for each religion like Al-Qur’an or Bible, and anything else.

From that, slowly but sure. All of the people that common with this kind of technology, start to accept it to their own culture. Cause they think, that kind of technology can make they remember important things to do if they forget about it. As a conclusion, technology grow together with the culture, they can’t be separated.

  6. in my opinion, technology had been changed the culture. let’s see kids nowadays. Almost children over 7 years old have a gadget. They do have a handphone, smartphone, notebook, tablet and so on. They connect with their friends using that gadget. They play with their friends using a gadget too. When I was a child, I used to play some traditional games with my friends. I played “petak umpet”, “dolip”, marble, and the other traditional games. We have a direct interaction. I have a happy childhood. It means that technology had been changed our culture. Especially the culture of playing games. The period has changed. The culture has changed too. I am a information engineering student, this is a challenge for us to make some inovation that can make people didn’t leave the culture. it’s just my word. If I have a mistake, then forgive me. Thank you. God bless you Ms. Khusnul 🙂

i don’t know i must agree or. not about article above .But I think the technology does not change the culture. because technology is just helping disseminate information and facilitate the work of someone.
the cultural changes because our society influenced from other nations cultures accept it ,not because of the technology. And a culture will change or not also depends on the attitude of each individual. There are some who will continue to carry on their native culture and some are going to change their culture. For example now many girlband or boyband in our country. That is because so many are affected by the culture from korea from where they know korea has a boyband or girlband ? of course from technology (internet like youtube). But remember technology is only a tool to information dissemination and a tool to help job . So if a cultural change is to blame is the fault of any individual who change the cultural not the fault of technology. Now the fate of our native culture is determined by how the generations of the future generation that is growing using existing technologies and how they attitude when there is an attack on the cultural influence of the culture of other nations whether they will accept the culture and remove the old culture or they will survive with a culture that has become the pride of they nation

I agree with opinion at the articles, but sometimes technology is that who changes culture. For example indonesian is a nation that have so many culture, one of them is traditional music just like gamelan, angklung, sasando, keroncong and many more. But now our culture being invaded by technology, many people prefer to digital music than traditional one. Our culture will gone over time if we did’t take care about it. So we must keep our culture and introduce this culture into our younger generation, make it friendly to him, or we can combine the two of them into one thing, make it friendly to our younger generation. Just like make a digital gamelan software that can play gamelan in the computer or we can play gamelan using microphone technology to make gamelan’s sound louder than usual. Finally we didn’t left our culture and we didn’t left by technology to.

I think, technology with culture is a mutualism need each other. Because technology can support culture become be easier and don’t change culture but culture follow the technology. With the development tecnology culture ir sure need tecnology for complementary that culuture. i see with example what in articles that tecnology have more benefit for the culture and that make a user comfortable to do his culture the example for sholat in mosque we will see there is fan, jam digital with indicates time to sholat not only that in general elections we usually chose candidate with use a tool for hole of paper but now that is old style. now tecnlogy have tecnology for general election be easier, simple, and fast. so i think tecnology and culture complementary each other and the original culture can not change. hank you

  10. Technology change the culture, or culture change technology?
That question is relative for me, depends on the place and the people who are on it.
Is the place including in developing countries or developed countries.
If the developing countries, I think the culture is not too affected by developments in technology, because the people on it tend to not have much money to buy various kinds of gadgets or a variety of other technologies.
While in developed countries I think a little difficult to maintain the original culture of the area, because people in there tend to have a lot of money and they want to make life more easier and practical.
Government also supply public facilities that use high technology, so that people are not aware leave their original culture and prefer more practical way and easier.

So is technology can change culture or culture change technology,
the answer is it depends on the place, is a developed country or not.
But in my opinion, culture should be maintained, but be transformed with inserting technology on it.

  11. I think technology has changed the culture.
Technology has helped our activities, through technology, all the activities we can do quickly and practically. Technology can also help us communicate with others without the need to meet in person.
Many applications that have been provided at this time. For example, communicating through social media, such as facebook, skype, yahoo messenger, whatsapp which we can access through mobile phones, tabs, blackberry, android, and other communication devices that already have the applications.
Because of the convenience offered by these applications, we often communicate through the application rather than talking in person. It makes us more rarely socialize with our surroundings. Indonesian culture which upholds modesty, friendliness, and socialization with the environment began to fade.
The advent of technology has had an impact on the culture of Indonesia. Without us knowing, reading culture which is applied in indonesia, is increasingly fading.
For example, the current library is looking for a place where science and foster interest in reading are available in schools and universities, rarely visited by students. We often assume that the library is not a modern thing.
Because, we assume that through existing technology, reading is not only done in the library and through printed books. With current technology, we can read through the e-book.
Because of some reasons, i think that in addition to having the benefit easier for us to communicate, the technology also allows us to have an attitude of individualism.

In my opinion, both of them influence each other. This is caused by the globalization that eliminates inter-state gate so that the culture of another country can log in anytime with ease. In this modern era, western cultures which is owned by modern countries have managed to spread to other countries that can make a new culture which was later adapted by other countries. That is because of the rapid advancement of technology that can help us to communicate with people that have different cultures. For example is when we get to know other countries culture after watching a movie on the internet which is a form of technology. However, the culture also affect technology, advanced culture makes a lot of people end up doing innovation, advanced countries typically be the pioneer of numerous innovations that eventually led to the increasingly sophisticated technological advances that can help us as modern people. So, my conclusion is both of them proportional and mutually influence each other. We as humans can only choose what is good for ourselves, we should be able to filter which advancement that brings us to the good, rather than an advancement that ultimately led to the slump.

  13. I think technology change culture not culture change technology. For example like Facebook, that’s right facebook can connect us to people around the world, but in the same time it make a distance between us and the real world.Facebook make our culture like “Bersilaturrahim” dissappear.Another Example Of Technology that change our culture is game like PlayStation,GameBoy,NDS,XBOX,PSP,SNES,DreamCast,Nintendo GameCube,Nintendo 64,and another else eliminated our traditional game like top, kite, hide and seek, stilts, marbles, gobak sodor, takraw, and another else.
Okay That’s My reason why I choose technology change culture not culture change technology,I hope you statisfied.

I think I agree with what was said an anthropologist who works at Intel Research. a technologically is growing very rapidly. no matter how many years go by, technology has evolved and developed beyond what we thought previously. whereas, the culture of a region of the world, there may have developed or may exist that have changed. However, it does not mean a change in a culture influenced by current technology. because we know that it is very strong culture of origin would be an area of his birth, so of course for the people it is still very sacred to be maintained. it’s just that, this section has a technologically important role as well. as another example is how to maintain communication between the members of the community who have a different culture so there is no misunderstanding between different cultures. using current technology, it has become very easy even though the distance between the culture very much. not only that, with the technology we will be able to share information our own culture and help avoid the cultural theft by other regions.

The topic is really interesting if we use it to make a debate class in class D ^^, is that right, miss ? hehe ~

anyway, based on the topic, 75% I agree with the antrophologist statement that technology change culture. we know that our culture in this period have impacted by technology. So, let’s look to the history when computer has found. When the first computer found people had felt that computer succesful to help their activity. and then step by step, human start to recover and make some complete funtion good computer to make their activity easy to do. Computer is the key of technology. people who have felt and thought that the computer is a magical thing that can be modified and developed will continue make sophisticated technology to make their job easier.

how technology change our culture is because we as a human always think that our gadget is WOW and it can do, give, learn we everything. Developers will make some gadget that suitable with our behavior and hobby. It can change our behavior like example above in the article.

    technology change culture ~
however technology change culture or not, only we and just we who know how to respond it 🙂

  16. I think this article tell about the conferrence that talking about the development of technologies in the world. Nowadays we are technology generation who most use technology , even technology is a needy. without technology we can’t do anything. So I think technology already neccessary in our life , so ,many people need technology which can be usable in their culture , different country means different culture ,even that also happen in different district. so , company who bulid the devices, applications, websites, should be make the different version too for many culture . ussualy their make the different product in language , time, and many more details. with the developer do that we can use that product easily and more efficient , even a lot of people think the product is made in indonesia. From that article , we can say , technology is more easy to get our version because the developer support us in use the technology product.

its true beacuse teknology change the culture, technology will be able to change the culture in a way changing habits the people, the original culture not so modern style
be glamorous and very modern.Much effect caused good and bad effect.
of the good effect that we can make everything easy and practical work, from the bad effects we become lazy reliance and more likely to do because the technology will progress daoat everything done quickly and do not remove the power.

Culture and Technology Influence Each Other

From the article that shared in the blog, i think that the writer more likely to agree that culture change technology. According to some statement in the article, that’s true if technology changes because of its adaptation to the human culture. But if we look from the other side, technology also cause some cultural change. Before internet become familiar and online shopping slightly used, people buy their goods by went to shops and pay their cost directly. After internet become popular and application that provided by banks like ATM and credit card easily obtained, people in modern society more likely to buy their goods by online.
Technological advances that make vehicle become something that easy to produced and important to almost people around the world also change the culture of ancients that usualy go on foot. From the explanations above, i make a conclusion that culture and technology influence each other.

  21. I don’t think that technology has changed the culture. In my opinion, I think that technology is changing along with the culture.technology evolving along with the increasing demand of technology. for example, long time ago people used letter to communicate over long distances, or wait the newspaper in order to know the latest news. Slowly, more people need something faster and easier.I think this is not a bad thing. Because more growing of technology, then the people and even the world became more increased as usual. now, people no longer need to write a letter and waiting for a long time to communicate with other people or over long distance communicate, they just have to send SMS (Short Message Text) by using their handphone or can directly calling the person they need to. People also don’t need to wait the newspaper for know the latest news, they can directly access the news website using their tablet or smartphone. So, technology for shorten the time and do something else that more important is not a bad thing, right?

  22. i am agree with tim finin opinion. because I think technology is the largest factor that causes a change in culture. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies. but I think any development of technology is not always a negative impact on every culture, sometimes the development of technology that exists today is precisely to facilitate a more developed culture. examples of technology that can be used as a positive impact on the culture was television. on television can be used as a promotional tool for the culture recognized by the public

    ayu permatasari
    125150207111090

  23. I think that technology is changing the culture, because in Indonesia a culture ravaged by technology, but it all depends on the users. the latest technology, all phones can be connected through the internet and on the internet there are good things and bad things. phones also make us lose track of time. it is true that mobile phones are made for Muslim users has several advantages, but if the user had already forgotten the time then there are some applications, such as (1) to remind them when it is time to pray, (2) they are oriented to Mecca and (3 ) disable incoming calls for 20 minutes, did not go according to plan. a country that does not withstand the attack of technology and its people can’t differentiate between good and bad, then the country will be damaged swallowed technology. fortunately in Indonesia are there laws for the use of technology, so technology is not abused, and citizens can sort out what is good things and bad things, and there is a slogan such as “IPTEK based IMTAQ” (Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi berlandaskan Iman dan Taqwa / Science and Technology based on faith and Taqwa).

  24. I think nowadays technology change the culture. Most of people in this world use technology like gadget, internet, etc. With technology, a person can talking with other person that have a far distance from us. They can chat, video call, sms, e-mail and other. Many years ago, if we want talk to someone, we must meet him at home or somewhere else, because if using a letter, takes long time. Because of that, we can see that technology change culture. Besides, many people prefer choose playing with her/his gadget than have a talk with other in real life. Also, there some person very close at virtual world but in the real life they like stranger, no conversation. Long time ago, if two person or more have a conversation, they must look at other face, if not, other person can judge that he/ she is unpolite person. Then, many traditional culture almost disappear because young people doesn’t know traditional culture from their coutry. They like other country culture, than their own country because they often see movie or drama from other country in TV, etc. So, as a young person, we must keep our own culture. Don’t let technology break our culture. Between technology and culture must ballance, support each other.. 😀

in the past time, i think that technology changed the culture. because in the past there are many people can’t use the technology fiture. so there are many people use the technology to the wrong way and automaticly it cahnged the culture.
but now, we can see that technology follow the culture. because of many people begin use the technology to do usefull things on their activities. Morover, the company of thecnology begin to make technology who suit with the culture.
for the example, now there are fiture who support muslim culture, ex : application who reminding time to pray, adzan application etc.
so at this time, technology follow the culture rule, if the technology doesn’t at the culture rule, there aren’t peopple use it.
Morover , we must be selective to use technology for our live.

Yeah this arcticle it’s so very interesting ,why??is true for me,technology has been changed life someone’s life and tecnology and technology can change a culture, whether it’s changing for the worse or even become more baik.contohnya only technology on the Internet today, Internet technology has greatly expanded, more people use the internet to do a lot of activities in his life. Take a look of all the people using and feel the technological development of young children to adults. but at least they did not forget the culture and not forgetting his responsibilities as a religion. Perhaps only we use technology, but remember do not forget your culture.

  27. I think that technology is changing the culture, because people can change with technology. Example of people becoming increasingly individualistic, for example, there’s someone who has a smartphone, when he was too addicted to the smartphone when there are people who invited him to speak the user’s smartphone too preoccupied with smartphonennya it. People are talking to the smartphone users feel ignored, or even be offended by the act of the smartphone users. Technology like that makes people become individiualis previous socialist. That is just one small example. How does the sophistication of today’s technology can transform human culture be changed from the previous socialist to individualist. Another example is many people are usually people become more sarcastic. For example, when we are angry with someone else, this time a lot of people who actually took it to the virtual world. Suppose such disparaging artist other artists through the virtual world could be imprisoned for acts that are not included in the fun. There are many other examples of how technology is changing the culture.

  28. technology is now growing faster than culture. we can see that culture in a long time is not a significant development. but here we do not discuss the fast or slow growing culture and technology. in my opinion, technology has never been a culture change. however, the culture can be changed due to many external factors (western culture). western culture influence culture residing in Indonesia. with the support of people who are not attentive to culture, Indonesian culture is rapidly changing.
in this case did not have anything to do with technology. But time went on, and many technology experts who follow the culture.

as an university student who work in program study of Information Technology so I should choose the IT field and because of that I say that the “Culture was change Technology”, because in my humble opinion and from my experience technology just a device that will help the people’s work and the culture cannot be changed without any intention of the of the society or community that will change the habit of that person,(the culture that I mean in this essay is culture that really will be an habit in a long time). the technology technology only serves to ease the burden on humans, it is indirectly for some people to be a trend of technology is often misunderstood by many people as a “new culture”, but in the end it still does not have the technology to change the culture of the community purpose, but in my opinion the culture technology that could change if the culture of technology has been no longer used, I think that’s all about something that raising in my head, if I have a mistake I really, apologize, and thank you to the admin(mrs. Technology is changing the culture. As time went on many types of technologies that have been created. Cultural life in the world now rely heavily on existing technology.
I felt desperately need technology to communicate and to my other activities. technology may be used if it is rare, but now no one can do an activity without the use of technology. I agree with the presence of technology in our culture, but all of it must be balanced with our activities we do we do that without using technology. there are some people who are now often forget their activities while using technology bleak games, sometimes forgetting to eat and do other activities.

Technology change our behavior, yes that’s true. Technology is the most valuable factor which is shape the community. When the behavior is repeat tie by time it becomes a new culture of society. The culture itself can be good or bad, depend on the media that bring the change and what perspective that we take. Cellphone, nowadays make people very easy to contact each other no matter time and distance. People start thinking that this way is more efficient in communication rather than sending a letter, nevertheless some think that this culture is a bad culture because it kills writing skill. In other hand, I don’t said that culture change the technology is wrong, only the proportion is below the others. Everyday people needs is increasing, creating a new ‘bad’ culture called consumptive. Somehow a technology market look it as a big opportunity, they will compete to create a new tech that cheap and give satisfaction to the people.

Technology is growing very rapidly. we must be prepared to deal with enough stock. but I do not know about the development of emerging technologies. based on the article I agree with the opinion of the article because I strongly support that the technology should be developed in line with the rules of religion or in other words, do not deviate from the teachings of religion. as my teacher said ” do not be swayed by something that is all around you, but be a person who is able to influence the environment around you.” it is the basis for me not to fall into the bad influence of technology.

in my opinion technology changed culture is better than culture changed technology because as we see right now the culture cant grow without the technology. Thats the reason why I study in Information Technology because right now technology is so popular. There is no company work without technology and right now there is no culture wiyhout technology. Imagine if right now we didnt have computer cellphone or any technology we cant communicate with many people like right now. And we can see right now almost everybody people cant live without technology. We always see people get mad if their device have a problem that indicate that without technology the life is so boring.Technology have changed the activities for the example If at past many child play with tradicional games like hide and seek, benteng-bentengan, engkel and many more now child play modern game at their cellphone, computer, and another device. Techonoly have changed the communicate too for the example at past people sending a letter for communicate with another people at different place right now people just type the messages on their device and they can send it by sms or email. Techonology have changed the education too. If at past student must joted down what teh teacher say right now the student can see what the teacher explain in e-learning like we did. If techonolgy didnt grow the culture didnt grow too. Except for the people who live in deep village because they live in palce which there is hard to communicate with people who live in the city. That the reason why culture in village harder to change than culture in the city

First, it’s true that Cultures are very robust and change slowly. New Technology adapted within a culture and used to support existing patterns of behavior. But in the other side, there is also true that technology changes culture like the need of human changed because the impact of new technology. In my opinion, human culture is the one that must be adapted with the new technology.
For example, the use of fax machine in many office. In old culture, human use mail for sending their application. But nowadays, they must learn how to use fax machine for send their application, because the addressed office only receive fax application.
I don’t know I must agree or not, the anthropologist is right for some reason, but the other side there is also some reason to deny it. Yes, the question is “What our modern world is doing to our societies?” Big question for some people, but in my opinion, I’m so confuse.

  35. first, i want to thank you ms, to let me comment on your blog ( wordpress.com ).
in my opinion, there’s no cultural change technology.

along with advances in technology, culture became a cultural remains, while the latest technology is always innovate, perhaps every year or every time, we can see an example now, Google released the glasses that can take pictures, and make videos directly through the glasses, the glasses will be released early 2014, it could threaten the culture that promotes privacy, and confidentiality myself, this will change the culture of a usually polite to be rude, usually prioritize common interests but as technology advances the human self is only concerned with their own interests, which is why I chose to change the culture of technology .
thank you for allowing me to comment, and I’m sorry if I’ve let you down, or make you angry ms, ms hopefully forgive and forget that I have put together a quiz late.

thank you for teaching us very patiently.

  36. I disagree that technology changes culture. There a lot of point of view about culture such as behaviour point of view, arts, historical buildings, etc. When we look at the culture from behaviour changing. I can say that what the Genevive Bell’s said is right. Because day by day people changed by their globalization, and technologies are the answer from people needed to challange theirself in globalization era. In the other hand, culture also can be protected through technologies. Now days in information technology development especially , there’s a lot of local developer such as local game developer, local mobile apps developer and another alocal platform developer that use local culture as a content of their software. Such as Solite Studio from Madura that develop their “Sakera Math” in mobile platform and have been uploaded in the windows phone marketplace and can be downloaded by people around the world. It can presenting our culture to the world. Especially, our youg generation can learn about their culture in exciting way. It also seems like declaration to the international people about Indonesian culture.

  37. I think technology didn’t change the culture. But according to me, technology born because there is a culture. Along the human life, there is a lot of culture that born from them both directly and indirectly. In their culture, there are many habitual that they do. From their habits, human starts to think creative and be creative. They begin to create things that can ease what they do in their habit. Their creativity increase over the time. And now, technology has reached the point of modernity. It cause humans have a high consumptive nature, slowly but sure they start to forget their culture and their habit. And now “Technology change culture”. But if they can filter the technology, they can work together with technology that can support their culture.

  39. I think technology who changes the culture, because, technology make people not be up to know their culture. they think their own culture not interesting, but technology can help us to know culture of other country. technolgy much better because we can search and know other culture from other country by technology. Technology can give you information faster than you learn a culture by your self.
